DescriptionOriginal published interior page from Shazam! #7 (DC Comics, 1973), page 2, drawn and signed by C.C. Beck, co-creator and definitive artist of Captain Marvel. This page is a great Bronze Age example of how DC navigated the characterfs complicated history after Fawcett Comics ceased operations. By this time, Marvel Comics owned the trademark to the name Captain Marvel, forcing DC to publish the character under the Shazam! title. As a result, the name Captain Marvel is treated as something that cannot be spoken openly, a workaround that Beck and DC cleverly incorporated into the dialogue and humor of the stories themselves. Classic Beck cartooning throughout—strong storytelling, expressive faces, and impeccable comedic timing. A historically interesting page that reflects both the artistfs legacy and a unique moment in comics copyright history. Social/Sharing |
