Description
I’ve had this piece for years along with the rest of the interiors from this story. I posted another DPS from this book way back when (check it out here: https:www.comicartfans.com/gallerypiece.asp?piece=1332480) and had been looking at some old GL books recently that reminded me of how ardently I was reading GL at the time. And I just posted another title DPS from Night Thrasher so thought I’d post this oldie by goodie!

John Stewart faces off against an army of Black Lanterns, risen from the grave of the planet Xanshi. Here he’s just arrived and surprised to see some (25 if I counted correctly!) of the thousands that have come back. Through the issue the Black Lanterns try to convince John it’s his fault they died, naturally causing some trepidation in our hero. But he snaps out of it, being maybe the best Earthen wielder of a GL ring (the WILL is strong in this one!) and defeats the bad guys. Always liked Benes’s composition in this one!

A fabulous looking double page splash! I love seeing the Black Lanterns, they make death seem so cool! What I don't understand is that in your description for the other double page splash from this issue you've linked to up above, you mention that THAT is the nicest piece in the book, along with...NOT this one? The page preceding THAT one? How on earth is this piece NOT the second best one in the book, or perhaps even FIRST? I mean....Heeeey, wait a minute! This is a piece of fabulous DC Comics art, I thought I was in Kahlil's gallery. Whose gallery is this?!?!

Lol, I do venture out some :)  Isn't it great deciding what's bestest between such goodies?!  :)  Thanks, Ruben, and all, for the comments!

Dark Night gets zombies
With the rush of the art piece,
Casting shivering shadows
On Ed Benes through the green,
And the light from a street lamp
Paints a lantern on my wall,
DPS is of a puzzle
Of a wild uneven scrawl.

Up a narrow flight to stars
With just narrow little room,
As I fight upon the dead
Katma Tui evening gloom.
Impaled on my wall
My eyes can dimly see
The Lantern of my life
And the puzzle Driq half green.

Fun dps by Benes with indeed a sense of John being overwhelmed by the black lanterns.

(you definitely should post the rest of that book on CAF ;)

Lots of imaginative poses, which really convey that this situation does not look good.

This is a phenomenal DPS. a full-page of John Stewart, nearly a full page of Driz, and 25 other black lanterns also? Despite the crowd and background, this DPS does not feel cramped or difficult to see everything. It's presented in full clarity.

This amazing page has me bleeding green with envy.

Thanks, Earl!  Definitely happy to have this one along with the other DPS and pages from this issue.  Lots going on, but as you say, executed right.  Nice way to start the issue off!

I will always have a soft spot for Ed's published work for DC. His run / work load is so impressive. I tend to get mad / bothered at DC for the lack of  collections showcasing Ed's work. Beautiful DPS and thanks for sharing.
