Description
The back cover of the hardcover edition of Daniel Clowes’s terrific graphic novel David Boring is essentially a faux Silver Age splash page — and I love it.
It’s a fun little meta gag, using the language of old superhero hype to sell a contemporary story about alienation and existential noir.
I’d had my eye on this original art for for a while, mostly because I love Clowes’s whole modern-retro sensibility. He channels mid-century comics but filters them through his own lens.
The character here — Yellowstreak, along with his supporting cast — reminds me of those offbeat ’60s comics from fly-by-night publishers that appeared, then disappeared without much of a trace.
Clowes really nails that vibe, doesn’t he?

Yes, the vibe is perfect. Clowes is a great alternative artist.

Yes, it looks exactly like a character from one of those fly-by-night publishers that appeared, then disappeared without much of a trace!

Excellent Clowes image and example of his humor/edge!
