THE ILLUSTRATED STAR WARS UNIVERSE (1995) Hand-Drawn Ralph McQuarrie Banthas Sketch for Illustration

A sketch of banthas hand-drawn by Star Wars artist Ralph McQuarrie for Kevin J. Anderson's book The Illustrated Star Wars Universe. This collection of new and re-purposed concept art from the original trilogy was compiled to focus on eight in-universe planets.

McQuarrie is widely considered one of the seminal Star Wars artists, having designed the look of Darth Vader, C-3PO, R2-D2, and countless other elements of the original film. McQuarrie was one of Lucas' first collaborators on Star Wars and created numerous concept sketches and production paintings that were used to convey Lucas' vision to those working on the film, and were later used to market it. McQuarrie's paintings were published in portfolios well-known to Star Wars collectors.

This sketch is hand-rendered on vellum and features a color test applied to a portion of one of the buildings. McQuarrie did line drawings on vellum and then traced over them to transfer outlines to illustration board when creating his paintings. The image depicts a pair of banthas with riders and pedestrians at the gates of a city with additional markers for dimensions in the margins. This lot exhibits discoloration on the upper edge and two torn corners. Dimensions: 11" x 8.5" (28 cm x 21.5 cm)
