Iron Man by Bob Layton – Tony Stark #1 Sketch Cover (CGC 9.8 SS)

This is one of those pieces that perfectly captures why I collect.

I’ve always believed that the strongest pieces aren’t just about how they look, they’re about who drew them and why that matters. Bob Layton isn’t just another artist who’s worked on Iron Man, he helped define the character during one of its most important eras. Because of that, getting an Iron Man piece from Layton himself just feels right.

What drew me to this immediately was how complete it feels. A lot of sketch covers come off as quick convention work, but this one has real presence, clean linework, a confident classic take on Tony Stark, and a composition that actually uses the space well. The color work by Shanna Layton Tvenstrup adds just enough depth without overpowering the drawing.

There’s also something I appreciate about the simplicity of it. No gimmicks, no over-rendering—just a strong, iconic Iron Man by an artist who truly understands the character.

Pieces like this are exactly why I tend to focus on artists with historical ties to the characters they’re drawing. It may not be the flashiest piece in the room, but from a collector’s standpoint, it checks all the boxes for me.
