Description
Number two in my 'The Body As Landscape' series (maybe). More joy in playing around with nude body surfaces of characters in a way they maybe haven't been seen before.

It's all there: Hulk's head, neck, traps, delts, biceps, triceps... but the muscles and veins and tendons grew like crazy and, in places, you can't tell which is which. Hulk's surface as a landscape we haven't seen before?

I also like adding inherent questions to a drawing. Like, what is the butterfly doing? Will Hulk punch it, or eat it? It's an in-between moment in time, where Hulk has doubtless just finished smashing something or someone, and has suddenly become still in this moment of perplexion at seeing such a peaceful insect flying in front of him. Does he smash, does he calm down further and turn back into Bruce Banner, what happens?

And what's with the muscles, veins, etc? Are they at their original Hulk size after transmogrification... or do they keep growing and stretching, and eventually grow so big and unwieldly that he cannot move well... then he is forced to calm down, and turns back into the doctor? I like fun questions that urge you to think a little more deeply about a character or an action, maybe open up a new avenue of story or character trait.

This is my second pinup with a butterfly; the first was the cover to Untamed #3, way back in 1993. Maybe the Butterfly Series is next?

I have a handful of characters I'd like to add to this series. Couple ladies coming up next. Eventually. Would be interesting to see other artists' take on this series, too. Drawing characters like this is, of course, too detailed for a regular comic - each comic would take six months to draw! But to do one-off pinups or covers in the 'Body As Landscape' concept... opens up some pretty interesting art possibilities.

I would like to see this Hulk in full color and blown up to wall poster size; I think it would have a lot of punch and mood.

Hey, the song 'Dog and Butterfly' by the band Heart is one of my faves. Somehow, I don't think substituting 'Hulk' for 'dog' makes the lyrics better, though...

Wow! What a cool version of the Hulk transforming. You can almost feel the movement and the weight of the Hulk as he becomes larger more monster like.

Love the style done in the 70's manner of mutated body horror!

Ah ha!

In my gallery,

A comment by the greatest

has always been missing.

I knew he had never me been dissing

Just hadn't seen a work of mine

worth his kissing.

Still, twas a comment, not a rhyme;

Pray, I might be worthy that too, in time.
