Description

I remember reading a book by Disbrow when I was younger and always wanted some of his art when I started collecting.  I never  had any luck winning any auctions for his work though.  This wonderful piece popped up last year so I put a little more effort in than usual and won it at auction.  I don't think that it's published but I really liked the looks of it.  How could you not like a drawing with Superman, the Sub-Mariner, Captain Marvel, the Human Torch, Batman, Captain America, the Spectre, and Sheena.  I have no idea who the floating head is supposed to be.  Disbrow wrote at the bottom of the page in pencil, "They sprang from hundreds of millions of newsprint pages, straight into the heart of America. The heroes and heroines of the adventure comics have long since ingratiated themselves into the cultural pattern of this nation."  I'm really proud to own this piece even if my scan makes it a little darker than it should be.

Really nice with that toned paper giving the piece age like the heroes Disbrow depicts!

Fascinating piece of art by a significant artist I hadn't heard of.  Interesting bio of him on Lambiek.  I wonder if the floating head isn't a hero, but a villain.  The wild-eyed expression and clearly drawn divisions between his teeth (villains often have prominent teeth in comics) scream "The Joker" to me.  Or maybe it's a character from one of the horror stories Disbrow spent much of his career on.

I did think the head might be the Joker but he wouldn't really fit in picture of heroes. It might be him though. I looked up the Lambiek article and it was pretty good.

I know Jay did a lot of horror art in the 50's.  I had no idea he was doing superhero artwork.  Super cool. Congratulations on scoring this one!
