I love everything about this 14x20 twice-up page. What initially drew me to it was the semi-splash dogfight and dry brushwork of smoke and antiaircraft shell explosions. The circular inset panel of the pilot reminds me of Kubert's Enemy Ace layouts. Panel 1 figures are well done in Calegari's style and the panel is nicely composed with the building and approaching plane in the background. I appreciate pages with a historical map, although the arrows to tell the two armies apart on this one look the same size.

Italian comics artist Renzo Calegari is best known for his western sagas such as Storia del West (History of the West, 1967) and Welcome to Springville (1977).

His career began in 1954 at the art agency of Italian comics artist Rinaldo Dami (Roy d'Ami). His first professional comics work appeared in western comics published by Edizioni Araldo such as I Tre Bill (The Three Bills, 1955), El Kid (1956), Big Davy (about frontiersman Davy Crockett, 1957), and La Pattuglia dei Bufali (The Buffalo Patrol, 1957). He also drew a story about World War I hero Sergeant York (Il Sergente York, 1954).

He went on to UK war comics for Fleetway, working on its titles from 1957 to 1966. GCD credits him with at least twenty-five stories in War Picture Library, five in Battle Picture Library, and one each in Air Ace Picture Library and War at Sea Picture Library. 

Calegari left comics in 1968 to participate in the Sessantotto movement of student protests that sought to change Italy's traditional capitalist and patriarchal society and in the Italian communist party.

Returning to the industry in '77 he did the western Welcome to Springville in Skorpio comic magazine and continued in the genre for the rest of his career.
