A rare original artwork by Eric Pulford, created for the British Quad poster of The Lady Vanishes, the Hammer Films remake of Alfred Hitchcock's 1938 classic and the studio's final production before a 29-year hiatus. As head of the Downton advertising agency, Pulford oversaw artists including Vic Fair, Brian Bysouth, and John Stockle, while also bringing Italian illustrators such as Renato Fratini and Arnaldo Putzu to work in London. Original Pulford artwork is scarce, making this surviving example particularly notable. Although Fair produced concept designs for the film, the studio decided to go with Pulford's artwork as it most closely reflected the style and glamour of the movie. The artwork is a mixture of watercolour and gouache on paper, applied to an artboard. A separate acetate overlay features printed text elements adhered to it, including pictures of the main cast. The board exhibits some edge wear, notably in the lower left corner and some marks around the borders. There are minor signs of foxing on the paper and the strip of tape along the acetate has begun to peel.
