Pulpy heroes! This time the Man of Mystery!

The Spider was created in 1933 by Popular Publications publisher Harry Steeger to compete with Street and Smith's vigilante hero the Shadow. Steeger said he got the idea for the character's name while playing tennis and seeing a large spider walking along the edge of the court.

The Spider's weapons are Colt .45s, air pistol, strong thin silken line or web, the ability to control or imitate people with his voice, and makeup and burglary kits. He leaves a red ink spider image on the foreheads of criminals he kills.

I asked for a mystery sketch of his vampire-like makeup that appeared later in the series.

Although the pulp magazine was cancelled in 1943, Eclipse, Moonstone, and Dynamite briefly resurrected the character in 1991, 2011, and 2012-14, respectively.

It's pretty fun, though it looks closer to a concept piece for a proposed The Spider animated series. Speaking of Spider, watch Spider-Noir!

Impressive illustration piece! Hard to call this just a sketch but a great mystery sketch result for sure - so many new artist names emerging this time around which is cool to see
