Description

1944.01.06 “Can He Cork it?”
by Paul R Carmack (1895-1977)
11 x 15 in., crayon and ink on board
Coppola Collection

Paul Carmack was a staff cartoonist for the Christian Science Monitor.

January 1944 was the opening phase of the Dnieper–Carpathian Offensive, part of the Soviet Winter war, when German forces are being driven out of Ukraine and the key question is whether Joseph Stalin can “cork” the retreat, as the German forces spill out to the west, to encircle and destroy them rather than let them escape.
