Marvelium sounds like a catch all cheat code - surprised Marvel didn't come up with that but I guess it's Captain Marvel inspired by the golden age to your point. Well also I guess maybe they did with Vibranium and Adamantium. I'm getting completely off track now and may enlist an AI chat bot to continue this conversation needlessly some more. Pretty sweet Don Newton art - always nice to have a sequential pair!
Never expected Scaffenberger's inks to work so well with Newton's pencils but they do!

it's funny, because I believe this is the same Don Newton famous for his Batman run..but the art is just not the same. Perhaps Alcala is the difference, but this page is very campy with exaggerated poses and less realistic renders/expressions. I wonder if this work is earlier in his career. oh..and Congrats, btw!
It is the same Don Newton and it is earlier in his career (this was his first big step and Batman was the second one). And while it is clear he would get better later on, I always found that his storytelling was all about gestures and movements whereas Alcala was so illustrative that I often found he froze those qualities in granit with his heavy, super rendered inking.
(and I will say, I thought you of all people would appreciate a more cartoony approach ;)
you know. I do appreciate it. I love alot of different art. as I don't own any Newton, I am only familiar with the examples friends have shown and it's always Batman..so that was my expectation. I am also a fan (but don't own any) work by CCBeck with Captain Marvel primarily because it feels innocent/wholesome and optimistic. I think looking at this as early work vs later work makes sense now. you have the widest breadth of art on CAF and I always enjoy seeing what you post next! congrats again.
The reason it doesn't look like his Batman work is because he purposely exaggerated the poses to keep with the C.C. Beck goofiness. But as Fred mentions, both Newton and Schaffenberger combine to emulate Wrightson's cartooniness as well. Nice page, Fred!

Great early Don Newton page and I agree that the Schaffenberger inks compliment the pencils very nicely!
I am not familiar with this "human" version of Mr. Mind; is this the same Mr. Mind that was a cartoonty alien worm with goggles in the Golden-Age Captain Marvel comics?
I don't recall the specifics of that story but I believe it's the same Mr Mind indeed ;)
I love how the art feels like a mix of 1970s style with Golden Age sensibilities.
CC Beck was a great artist and Captain Marvel was his baby. I would have thought he would have appreciated Don Newton for his true style and the modern take on Captain Marvel. Kurt inking this is such a great connection to the late Golden Age of this fun character. Nice addition to your gallery.
