Supergirl – Roby Amor

A couple of years back I got the feeling that Roby Amor was an artist that was going places. As I had by then failed to jump on the bandwagon of a fair few artists and kicked myself when pages of their art started to command prices far beyond my meagre means I resolved to pick up something – anything – by Roby at the earliest opportunity and then this beautiful coloured-pencil drawing came up.

I cannot say that I am a big Supergirl fan. Like many CAF members, I am sure, my comic-reading preferences are dictated more by the creative team – sometimes the writer, more often than not the artists – than by the character, so I have picked up a Supergirl title in the past if I like the artist or even if the artist is new to me. I am not too sure of which version this drawing is. From the head up it looks more like the Sasha Calle version that was seen in The Flash movie, but that came out a year after this drawing was executed. It definitely is not the Milly Alcock version although it does have the sassy attitude and statement sunnies. So I can see it as an amalgam of a number of different iterations. As the new Supergirl movie is based on the Bilquis Evely version seen in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow there is even a very tenuous link to that as people do say that the lush and organic Bilquis Evely-style is reminiscent of Alex Niño.

This is a rare occasion that I have uploaded a film-related drawing after I have seen the film that the drawing commemorates and that is due to the UK release of the Supergirl movie being one day earlier than the US general release (not counting the world premiere last Monday in Brooklyn). I am obviously way too old to be the target audience for the film but it was an enjoyable enough way to spend a couple of hours – in an air-conditioned film theatre on what was up until then the hottest June day in the UK since records began. It was also nice that a number of comics creators such as Roger Slifer and Keith Giffen were name-checked in the closing credits, but I was especially pleased to see the Biz up there as, I don’t know if I have ever told you this, he is a sound sound bloke. You can leave after seeing those comics creators are acknowledged because there is no special post-credits scene.
