Paul Carmack was a staff cartoonist for the Christian Science Monitor.

By mid-October 1942, American readers were experiencing a marked asymmetry in wartime reporting. Victories were plentiful and loudly advertised. Guadalcanal (landed August 7): by October, the press was finally able to report sustained American resistance and Japanese losses. El Alamein: British preparations were openly hinted at, and optimism was rising. Atlantic convoy successes were increasingly emphasized as U-boat losses mounted.

Losses were still happening but now lagged or minimized. American shipping losses continued (though declining), casualty lists were growing, and Guadalcanal was still grinding and deadly, with reversals and stalemates. But this information appeared later, deeper in the paper, and often stripped of drama or immediacy.

Some commentators, columnists, and ordinary readers were asking: Are we being shielded from bad news? A question frames the cartoon. Editorial judgment, not state coercion, is under scrutiny.
