Description

Here's the sketch that set me on the road to ruin - my very first piece of original art! I was a huge fan of Nexus back in the day, utterly in love with the story, characters, Mike Baron's writing and Steve Rude's amazing artwork. I was working a small local con in late 1986 and The Dude was the main guest; a good friend of mine was shopping for a birthday present for me and asked what I wanted. We happened to be standing in front of Rude's table at the time and I glanced down and noticed Steve doing a sketch for someone. I said something along the lines of "what the heck, howzabout one'a those?", and that was all she wrote. Been a ravenous collector ever since. I will never, ever sell this piece - not only is it a gift, by one of my all-time favorite artists, but as my first piece of original art it has so much sentimental meaning for me... I think it's the greatest. Pencil and markers on 11x14 Bristol.

UPDATE: This piece was just published in BACK ISSUE #9, April 2005 issue, by TwoMorrow Publishing, p.55, very first piece in the "Pro2Pro" interview between Steve Rude and Mike Baron!

Funny comment from Brian Stelfreeze - he was looking through my portfolio and I mentioned that this piece by Rude was what got me diving wholeheartedly into collecting art; Brian's response: "Man, Steve f*cked you pretty bad then! What'd you ever do to him, run over his dog?" Makes you wonder if these artists have any idea the kind of addiction they start when they do that first con sketch for someone ;)
