DescriptionNow this is a very cool piece! In the late 1920s and early 1930s, cartoonist Walter Berndt would occassionally feature real baseball players in his Smitty comic strip. Cupples & Leon reprinted a section of one of these storylines in Smitty at the Ballpark, which feature Babe Ruth in part of it. In this particular daily strip, from 7/7/32, Smitty meets Rabbit Maranville, the Hall-of-Fame shortstop. In the last panel, you can see that Smitty scored and autograph off of Maranville. The small rectangle of paper at the bottom of the panel features Maranville's authentic autograph! A very cool association between baseball and the funnies.Social/Sharing |
