I've long been a fan of Walter Berndt's charming Smitty comic strip. Berndt's vintage work has not been all that common over the years, but within the past year or so, the floodgates seem to have opened.
Smitty has always been a wonderful reflection of the period that it was created in. Berndt would occasionally place real people into the strip, such as the jockey that appears in one of these dailies. He also created many baseball-related strips, with the stars of the day appearing in the strip.
Walter Berndt is certainly not a forgotten artist. His work is beloved by a small group of collectors for whom the charm will never fade.
