DescriptionOnce I decided I wanted a Frank Thorne page, I discovered how seldom they come to market (I've heard that Thorne keeps his originals). One of his Red Sonja pages would have the most nostalgic appeal, a Ghita of Alizarr or Lann page would certainly provide that aesthetic "yow!" that we all seek, and even a Moonshine McJuggs page would fulfill the sexy Thorne damsel requirement. Then, along came this Sally Forth cover, which Frank donated to help Fantagraphics' Gary Groth raise money to fund his legal melee with author Harlan Ellison. I'm a huge Wally Wood fan and have the 1993 Eros Comix reprints, among other print versions of Woody's classic cheesecake comic strip. I never expected that Frank Thorne's tribute cover for issue #6 would become available. Instead of Thorne's trademark torrential hair, thick eye-lashes and bee-stung lips, Frank gave Sally her Wally Wood face instead... a nice homage to the "world's second-best comic book artist." I haven't given up on finding a nice Sonja or Ghita example! Addendum: After a dozen years I just got around to dummying up trade dress for this cover. The title logo is on a mylar overlay and doesn't affect the original art itself (now in additional images). Social/Sharing |

The perfect Sally Forth figure more than makes up for the less than successful Snorky. Great cover.

Thorne's an artist's artist--an incredible talent with ink, maybe one of the best. His earlier work is criminally underappreciated--e.g., work on war and western books. I'd love to own a page (esp. from his iconic run on RED SONJA) but never see them. He does keep them all?

Agree wholeheaartedly with the "second best...my ass" comment! How on earth you acquired this is a marvel to me still, in spite of reading the back story. Thorne + Wood = an exciting piece, so congrats! :-)
