DescriptionThis quote came from the very first volume of Modern Masters featuring a great interview with Alan Davis. Still one of my favorite interviews from the series. I could probably find dozens of great quotes from this book. Make sure to check it out if you ever get the chance!Social/Sharing |

We all swipe, even unintentionally. The honest call it a homage or an influence.

I'll just say this. Whenever you see an artist draw like another artist who came before him, it's no accident.

Sometimes artists are told to draw like other artists. All the Kirby clones for example or the Image style, etc, etc. Theres a famous 2000ad comic character called Judge Dredd, whose look was created by Carlos Ezquerra. Ironically, one of my favourite artists Mike Mc Maahon was told to ape Carlos' style when he started drawing it.

Agreed. The Image “house style” mentality is what turned me off to them initially. At the same time, it was probably the best way for each founding member to establish his own “brand” under the Image umbrella. So, if you wanted to work for Jim Lee, you had to draw like Jim Lee. If you wanted to work for Liefeld, you had to draw like Liefeld. If you wanted to work for Silvestri, you had to draw like Silvestri. And if you wanted to work for Todd, you had to draw like Todd (let’s face it, if you’ve seen any of Capullo’s work at Marvel, he didn’t look anything like Todd). But that’s certainly different from the artists who emulate on their own accord. No one is making Dodson draw like Adam Hughes. No one is making Hitch draw like Alan Davis. No one is making Mike Hoffman draw like Frazetta. Call it tribute, call it homage, call it influence. Call it whatever you want, but it is certainly no accident.
