Brotherly Hate - Aquaman and Thor

Here’s a piece I commissioned from Ron Frenz thru Scott Kress (http://www.catskillcomics.com/). I asked Ron for an image of Aquaman and Thor awaiting the onslaught of some barely glimpsed foe while the gloating, disembodied heads of Loki and Ocean Master hovered above the scene. When I saw the piece and realized who Ron had drawn sneaking up on our heroes I was floored! Y’see, those three robot-like figures in the background? They’re the extremely obscure Awesome Threesome. For those not in the know, the Awesome Threesome are Torpedo (sometimes Torpedoman), Magneto, and Claw. They only appeared twice, once in Aquaman #36 and once on the Filmation Adventures of Aquaman program (episode title “The Torp, the Magneto, and the Claw”) – although the Torpedo also battled Aquaman solo on the cartoon (“Treacherous is the Torpedoman”). And with Loki (Thor’s step-brother) and Ocean Master (Aquaman’s half-brother) involved, could I call this anything but Brotherly Hate?

I love this piece; it’s one of my favorites. The Thor figure has a hint of Kirby about it while the Aquaman figure looks like a Cardy-era Sea King. Yet both heroes are undeniably Frenz. I recommend Ron and Scott to everyone. Both men were great to work with.
