Description

One of the joys of commissioning artwork is getting to correspond with artists whose work you fondly remember from years ago. I was but a wee lad when Gold Key was pumping out comics in the shadows of its larger rivals, Marvel and DC. But I remember how cool the GK comics looked with their painted covers. Their titles and heroes weren't as slick or popular, but that didn't stop some of them from being worthy of attention.
One such title was DOCTOR SOLAR, MAN OF THE ATOM. The artist who drew his adventures was the great FRANK BOLLE.

Frank drew at least several of Gold Key's titles, including THE PHANTOM at one time. He also did some work for Marvel. However, he may be best known for his work on comic strips like APARTMENT 3-G, WINNIE WINKLE, and THE HEART OF JULIET JONES. None of that soap opera stuff for me though. When I finally got the chance to commission Mr. Bolle, I knew I'd have to have him draw everyone's favorite Man of the Atom.

Never could figure out why his name was "Solar" but he had atomic powers. But I digress...

Frank Bolle just recently celebrated his EIGHTY-FOURTH birthday on June 7, but he knocked this piece out and had it on my doorstep less than two weeks after receiving payment. This, while he's still regularly drawing comic strips. Think about that the next you time you're waiting for an artist half his age that you commissioned eight months ago to finish, or start, a piece you've already paid him for.

Frank Bolle is one of the true great veterans of the comics business. He's fast and oh-so reasonably priced. So here's what you do: Head on over to frankbollestudio.com and commission him to draw whatever suits your fancy -- superheroes, sword and sorcery, sci-fi, western -- even that Winnie Winkle in a bikini piece you've secretly desired. He'll probably draw the line on Mary Worth in a bikini, though. And even if you don't commission, just e-mail and wish him a belated happy birthday. Heck, anyone drawing cool pictures like him at age 84 deserves some love.
