The Marvel Family

(1942/2001) (Fawcett Publications) This beautiful ensemble consists of 3 separate pieces of artwork by 2 different artists. The first example of particular note is the ONLY KNOWN PAINTED COLOR RENDITION OF CAPTAIN MARVEL, JR. BY MAC RABOY. Dating back to 1942, the exact reason for Raboy painting this “gouache portrait” of Captain Marvel, Jr. is unknown. When Raboy’s widow, Lulu was attempting to sell the painting some 30 years ago, she wrote a letter to the gentleman assisting her with this task. This letter reads as follows: “Please forgive me for taking so long to do what should have been done long ago. Under separate cover, I’m sending the original painting (for the cover of the first Captain Marvel, Jr. comic book) and some of Mac’s work on the Green Lama. I hope that they’ll be of value. Please initial the contracts where I did and return one to me. Good luck (for both of us). Sincerely, Lulu Raboy”. In addition to possibly being the Alternate Cover Art to Captain Marvel, Jr. Comics #1, it is theorized that this painting could have also been intended as a photo premium through the Captain Marvel Fan Club. It is even likely that Raboy could have painted this gouache bust portrait of Captain Marvel, Jr. simply because of his personal fondness for the character. The other half of this special ensemble consists of 2 very detailed “colored pencil” bust portraits of Captain Marvel and Mary Marvel by Marc Swayze. With Captain Marvel as the centerpiece, Mary Marvel is appropriately placed to Cap’s right so that she is facing him. In turn, Captain Marvel, Jr. is placed to Cap’s left so that he is facing him as well. With each member properly positioned, The Marvel Family is now officially united by the legendary talents of Mac Raboy and Marc Swayze. (5-1/4” x 5-1/4”)
