Those cards are a bit of a mystery as the artists make virtually nothing from them. Beats me why a good artist  would do such things? Something for your cv perhaps? This is a really good one.

For the fun of it? To be in the good graces of the publisher (again) ?

I heard some artists do it for vanity projects. Like, say someone offered you the gig of doing some for a Star Wars project or some other big franchise or corporation. So you could say, if asked, I did work on such and such. The money is apparently appalling and not appallingly good.
