I first became aware of Mr Gammill's work when I discovered an issue of Superman thinking it was Byrne's work. Being in my teens, I remember having struggled with the art to decide if it was Byrne or not penciling the issue and being amazed by their similarity in style. I could not mistake the two now but that was the very first time I noticed his work after having passively read his numerous fill-ins (on Spidey and X titles) and his great runs (on Marvel Team Up, Power Man & Iron fist and Superman came later on). I've since then sought out his complete body of work and loved everything he's done. A great and faultless storyteller. That must have been the film industry analysis too since they've stolen him from the comic industry for many years now. Worth mentioning, it was pointed out to me that the great John Byrne himself posted on his forum that he consider Gammill's work superior to his (a better or superior draughtsman is the exact expression if memory serves). Knowing that Mr Byrne is both extremely talented and known to have “an ego”, this is a strong compliment. I will leave the debate open and the fans decide who is the better artist but I personally believe that if Mr Gammill was given the same career options (or if he had wanted to stay in the Comic industry? Why he “left” is not clear to me, if it was of his own volition or not) that Byrne had, he would have had the same kind of highly successful career as the former enjoyed. I always need more of his art provided I can find it :)
