Description

This is page 26 from the 1961 Classics Illustrated version of Oliver Twist by Reed Crandall (1917-1982) and George Evans (1920-2001). It shows a Scrooge-like Fagan and appears to be far from the end of the story.

Reed Crandall and George Evans were two stars of EC Comics who came on hard times (and work at low-paying CI) once the Comics Code Authority closed everything but Mad. Crandall had previously been a star at the Eisner-Iger shop, did Blackhawk for several years before EC. His career revived and he did his best work for Warren's Eerie, Creepy and other publications in the late '60's and early 70's until alcoholism, and a stroke finished his work, career and life. Evans, fared better, doing Secret Agent Corrigan from 1980-1996 and doing the Sunday for Flash Gordon on the eve of his death.

My guess is that Crandall did the pencils and Evans the inks. The line work lacks Crandall's usual fine detail and the simian face of Monks is characteristic of Crandall.
