A nice personal memento from SuperCon weekend by my boy Wade Furlong. This is a drawing he did for me on the inside cover of his art book Fortified Excrememt(s). Get your copy today (shameless plug)!
Wade and I have been corresponding via email since we met at SuperCon last year (while he was working on my first commission piece). We didn’t get to spend as much time chatting as I would’ve liked, so I was really looking forward to seeing him THIS year. Unfortunately, his art rep couldn’t make the trip, so Wade told me he probably wasn’t going to come either.
Needless to say, I was quite disappointed, as I really wanted to thank him in person for the fabulous job he did on the commission (see for yourself in my Artists A-Z Wide Angle Gallery). And of course spend more time getting to know him. Anyway, I resigned myself to just trying to wrangle another commission out of him. As we began to collaborate on ideas, we became more and more excited about the project and that’s when I decided to try and use that momentum to try and convince him to come to the show anyway. He eventually acquiesced and the rest is SuperCon history! LOL! Okay, maybe HISTORY is a slight exaggeration, but it was a bloody good time!
As for how this drawing came about, well, I had always intended to buy a copy of Wade’s book, but I wanted to get it from him personally in hopes that I might get a little doodle done on it. When I told him this, his response was to email me an actual “COUPON” for a free limited edition of the book. I was fully prepared to treat it as a little joke on his part, but he was dead serious about his coupon. He flat out told me, no coupon – no book and no drawing! PERIOD! I was going to turn the tables on him and print up a bunch of copies and just hand them out to everyone, but he was smart enough to state on the coupon that it was good only for me! Anyway, I’m glad I took it seriously and brought it to the show with me, because this is the result.
So thanks buddy! Thanks for coming, thanks for letting me hang with you, thanks for my free book, and thanks for my kick ass drawing! Can’t wait for commission #2. Just from our discussions, I know it’s going to be SICK, SICK, SICK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
