Description

I'm dipping into my reserve of book illustration original art and offering a precious few choice items for sale.

This aspect of my career is unknown to most comics fans, though I've illustrated quite a few books over the past 20 years -- one or more a year!

My latest such project, The Vermont Monster Guide, will be out by the end of the summer. It's the latest of my many collaborations with novelist and New England folklorist Joseph A. Citro. Joe's also my best friends -- I'm lucky to know him, and we love working together when the stars and contracts properly align.

This particular piece of original art is from one of the first pro collaborations I undertook with Joe Citro. It's one of a hefty number of illustrations I did for Joe's excellent novel Deus-X in its first edition (1994, Twilight Publishing). The subsequent printing doesn't sport my illustrations -- still, it's a terrific read, and my favorite of all Joe's novels.

Joe tackled something rare, frightful and incredibly ambitious with this magnum opus, worthy of the great Nigel Kneale (creator of Quatermass), I kid you not.
  • You can still find highly affordable copies of the rare Twilight Publications Bissette-illustrated hardcover signed-and-numbered edition online -- here's the abebooks.com link, check it out and don't dawdle if you're interested.

  • (The current unillustrated paperback edition is still available, published by University Press of New England's Hardscrabble Press imprint -- recommended!)

  • (For more info, check out Joe's own website, here!)

  • The original has a note referencing the caption quote from Joe's novel: "The Rapture's Come!" The side note, written in my own hand, fully reads: "Illo. for (manuscript pg.) 19 - Caption: "The Rapture's Come!"

With every book illustration project, I choose a different media to work in to establish a distinctive identity for the project. I had loved using DuoShade board -- an illustration board used since the early 1900s that had various tones imbedded in it, invisible until you brushed on the respective chemical that would bring out the line-cut reproducable pattern -- throughout my comics career, and chose Deus-X as my 'swan song' with this tool.

This illustration measures 6 1/2" x 9 5/8" image area, on a 8 1/2" x 11"+ piece of DuoShade Board that's still in excellent condition. However, the DuoShade chemical board has slightly discolored (they all do, over the years) and the gradations do fade over time; you'll have to be careful how you frame and display this, UV glass is recommended and you'll have to keep it out of direct sunlight. I always liked how the darker (cross-hatch) tone looked brown, and that tea-coloration is still evident in the original artwork. There's clean white border tape around the illustration to cleanly define the image area, and it still looks mighty sharp. It can be yours for $120 plus shipping ($7.30 Priority Mail anywhere in the US, more for foreign shipment) -- first to email me at msbissette@yahoo.com wanting to buy wins it.
