I'm not sure what this was used for but I thought that it was simply beautiful. The pose looks familar, perhaps Doug swiped it from somewhere.

2/6/2016 Update: Thanks to George H.'s comment/lead I finally did a Google search and found Doug's inspiration source for the the Painting, an old Look magazine cover with Buster Crabbe's Flash Gordon. See additional images below..

This was done I think as a flash gorden piece but the hair was colored dark- the pose is very similar to the click magazine cover that was done with Buster Crabbe as aprt of the promotion for the second Flash Gorden serial. At some point Doug did a bunch of movie inspired illsutrations I am not sure if any were ever published
