Description
a grail of grails...at least for me it is. this work of art has it all, and it's HUGE, it could easily stand alone without any comic book history just as an example of fine art...but it is what it is. Beautiful painting framed by an amazingly constructed border adding a sculptural nature to it.

Scott - calling this piece a grail is a euphemism. Congratulations on acquiring something that transcends the genre!

Scott, the Sandman covers are breathtaking!! Thanks for sharing! Although I think that both pieces would need more photos to appreciate the detail, since so much was lost in the repoduction of the published covers.

Wow, How did you come by these, they are truly stunning and not only an important part of comic book history but also Dave's development of the artist. He really was going all out to create something unique for Neil and DC. I think it's interesting to note that had Sandman first been published on a few years later these would more than likely have been created as digital collages rather than the beautiful artifacts here. Congratulations.

Gaiman was the heart and voice of the series, but McKean was its unique face. After seeing the cover, you knew the story inside was going to be different somehow. And, as you said, as art, this stands (figuratively & literally it appears) on its own.

It's funny, it was not completely evident (to me at least) that this McKean art for this Sandman cover (and others [?]) was actually three dimensional. Ultimately, it should not be a complete surprise, because one of the wonderful things about the Gaiman-crafted Sandman tales (and apparently the McKean covers as well) was that not everything was quite as it initially seemed. Congratulations on acquiring a genre-transcending piece of unique historical significance and thanks so very much for sharing it with the rest of us.

Wow!  Only just saw this for the first time, it is awesome.  Grail might be an understatement for sure.  Did you do add the 3D features or is that how it came?  Such a unique display, totally elevates an already spectacular piece.

You know, I really could have sworn I commented on this juggernaut already. What's already such an impactful, well-known cover, is of course an unconventional piece of art in itself. Just breathtaking!! Congrats on holding onto this despite some likely tempting offers!

Homeric!  This has to be kept safe, otherwise guests to your home might be absorbed into its beauty...never to be seen again, just another grain of sand added to the hourglass!  ;)
