Timber Wolf by Norm Breyfogle

Norm was one of only two artists* that I wanted to get sketches for the Legion book from at the 2008 MCBA MicroCon, held at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds. Among other things, he had done a backup story in an 80’s issue of The Legion of Superheroes. I’m always excited to get a sketch from someone that had actually worked on the title. One of the main characters in the story was Timber Wolf, so he decided to draw him. Being left-handed, he asked if he could do the piece on the opposite side of the page.

This was the last sketch I received in the book before I decided to take it apart and put the pages in archival sleeves. The fact that he did the sketch on the opposite side of the book was part of the reason. Some sketches done in Sharpie markers were starting to bleed onto the next page’s sketch. Some of the pencil sketches were getting smudged with fingerprints showing up. It was just time, and I knew there were only a page or two left of the book anyway. It was both a relief and a little scary taking the thing apart though – over 11 years of collecting and over a thousand dollars in sketches… But that’s why I had to do it.



* The other was Steve Fastner, who I discovered doesn’t do sketches – he’s more of an airbrush artist.
