This gallery is the culmination of nearly 13 years of work. Intense work, but not difficult. The work was sometimes monotonous, but never boring. I have been a comic collector for as long as I remember. My two older brothers collected while I was in my formative years, and I was exposed to everything from The Incredible Hulk to Archie to Superman and more. In their collection were a few assorted issues of Superboy featuring the Legion of Super Heroes, the oldest of which was #210 -- the one with Soljer. I didn't know much about these characters, but they intrigued me. In the late 80's, Superboy left the Legion for his own solo book, and DC had a major push for the Legion. It was at this time that I started collecting the series myself. The Great Darkness Saga solidified it for me. Then I remember Giffen's art taking a dramatic turn, and I stopped collecting at about #310 or so. I would pick up occasional issues thereafter. Until Zero Hour came. DC was restarting the Legion. No past history. Everything started at ground level again. I remember reading an article in Hero Illustrated and getting excited. I haven't looked back since, fully immersing myself in all things Legion. I haven't missed an issue since. I own my own flight ring. I attended Legion fan dinners at the Chicago conventions. I've scoured back issue bins and have picked up an almost complete set of Legion appearances. I was a full-fledged Legion fan. My friend Aaron Most got me into asking for sketches when attending conventions. At first, I got them on backing boards and on the artist's own paper. Eventually in mid-2006, I decided to buy a sketchbook so I could tote all my sketches in one place. I've gotten sketches in that book from artists such as Larry Elmore, Adam Hughes, Moby, and Jeph Loeb. There was no rhyme or reason to the subject matter of the sketches -- I received everything from Boba Fett to Uncle $crooge, Buffy the Vampire Slayer to Cancer: The Crab Boy. Late in 1996, I decided to start a second sketchbook. The other one was far from being full, but I wanted to try something a little different. I had heard of other people doing themes for their sketchbooks, such as the X-men, Batman characters, or the like. As my favorite book of all time is the Legion of Super-Heroes, I figured what better than to collect sketches of different members of the group. There are so many different Legionnaires, in many different costumes, the opportunities seemed endless. I also decided to add an extra factor to the book as well -- I would ask who the artist's favorite character is, and have them sketch that character. My reasoning was, if they liked the character, they'd be more apt to do a better job on the piece than me just selecting a subject for them. So that's how I collected the following sketches.
