Lightning Lad by Mike Grell

When you think about iconic Legion artists, Mike Grell has to be near the top of the list. He was the artist who pencilled the first Legion issue I ever picked up, Superboy and the Legion of Super-Heroes #210, and had done many issues during the 70's. He's also credited with creating comic characters such as Warlord and Jon Sable Freelance. When I found out that he was going to be a guest of the 2003 FallCon, I resolved that I was definitely getting a sketch from him.

The first thing I did once I got to the con was to find his table. He told me to drop off the book at the end of the day and he'd do it that night. This proved to be a little bit of a challenge, as I've already detailed in my notes from Rich Buckler. Ultimately though, my friend Greg was able to get the book to Mike, and he did one of my favorite sketches in the book.

On a side note, when I picked up the book from Mr. Grell, I noticed that part of the spine was starting to detach from the book. While not a big deal, for the longest time I internally "blamed" Mike Grell for it. After writing up my memos here, I've come to the realization that both Rich Buckler and my friend Greg are suspects as well.

Not that it matters, now that the book has been dismantled anyway, but it's an interesting side story anyway.
