Tony Bancroft is a director for
Toonacious Family Entertainment. Formerly, he was a Disney character animator and co-director of
Mulan.. This drawing is one of his contributions to
Help the Hodges, a
National Cartoonists Society Foundation effort to raise money for the Hodge family's medical bills. Tony and
Chad Frye were selling drawings, collecting contributions, and displaying auction artwork at the
CTN Animation Expo in Burbank, CA on Nov. 20-22, 2009.
I first met Tony at San Diego when he was at his brother Tom's booth in 2003. He's come by my brother's
Stuart Ng Books booth in the years since and we talked a little bit. As well as working on the Chinese story for Disney, Tony was the English language voice director for one of my favorite movies, Hayao Miyazaki's
Porco Rosso, and produced a fine soundtrack. After buying a couple of his finished pieces, I requested the Chinese heroine Mulan and Tony advised me that he didn't draw her every day as he had done for characters on which he was an animator. With the
Art of Mulan book for reference, Tony drew Mulan and Cri-Kee for me. I really appreciate his effort.
