Description

Note the similarities and differences between this 1980 commission and the 1981 printed cover for THE COMICS JOURNAL #64. The commission is clearly dated 1980, the printed cover is dated 1981. The commission has Kane's cursive signature; the cover had Kane's calligraphic signature. The printed cover also extends the tree and foliage aspects of the illustration. My suspicion is that Kane did the 1980 commission, and then when asked by Fantagraphics for a cover to go along with his interview, he used the pencil preliminary for the same drawing to do something slightly more elaborate for The Comics Journal cover. Does anyone have any further guesses? Purchased from Nathan Evans in November 2009. The image area on the 1980 piece is slightly larger than a traditional 11" x 17" comic page from the time period -- basically extending into the whole bristol board without borders. There is some fading of Kane's brown marker, but the black marker areas remain fairly intact.

I like what the "faded marker" brings to a piece. The offside is keeping it from fading more. Great pickup!

Always liked this pose and cover. I wonder how frequently this business of the fading markers factors is a consideration in collecting Kane art.
