Description

The 1st ever 15 cent SS cover! John Buscema and Dan Adkins at their best! This cover has been restored to the way Big John intended it.

When I got it the entire SS was stated over. When I removed the stat I found a gluey mess underneath along w/ the original Surfer. See the published piece below w/ the stat and the gluey version of what it looked like after I removed it (see the additional images below)

As you can see they stat-ed the SS so they could move him down, tilt him a little and make the Ghost more translucent. (see the added lines to the Ghosts left arm) Not only is this totally unnecessary but actually DETRACTS FROM THE ART. Look and the restored art and the way the Surfer has flown PAST the Ghost and how the Ghost is looking BACK at the Surfer. Then look at the published version. It's almost as if the Surfer is still in FRONT of the Ghost YET the Ghost is still looking back!?!?!??

It would have been forgivable to move the SS down to show more of the logo but the additional change to the Ghosts left arm?!?!? Who's responsible for THAT colossal blunder? Stan? Roy? Definitely someone with ZERO artistic vision.

Another interesting note: This ish was to be another 40 page "double-size" 25 cent ish like the first 7. Due to sagging sales they split it in half, had John do another cover and the other half became ish 9.

Also, does anyone else think it's funny that there's and EYE drawn on the Ghosts eye patch? :)

I remember this comic and this series so well. I agree with you that this is Big John and Adkins at the height of their powers.

One of my favorite SS covers, along with 2-6, from the absolute peak of Buscema's career. & I just read on comicart-list that you've restored it to JB's original design, w/ Surfer higher on the page, which makes it even better. Bravo.

One of the best cover by Big John, better than the printed one, I can't believe you had the whole Silver Surfer#5 book, I don't want to know the price you got for it because either I could have bought it at that time or either because I could not, in both cases I should be crying because it's my all time favorite Silver Surfer book by Big John Buscema ! Congratulations for this one Len.

well 18 I got from Jack Kirby, 4 I got from Sotheby's and 14 I got from and old friend of mine. I forget where he got it.

First of all, I'm sorry, but 25 comments is just unacceptable for this priceless gem. I mean, come on, show some respect for crying out loud. Secondly, even though this may not sound exactly right, but thank goodness for sagging sales. At least the world got an extra John Buscema Surfer cover out of it. Anyway, congrats on snagging one of these. Seventeen might sound like a lot, but finding one is like an Indiana Jones level score.

Thx for the kind words. "Back-in-the-day" when this was first posted there wan't as much traffic on the CAF, hence the low views/comments. And btw there were 18.
