Description

15 years ago Charlie Roberts turned up the mother lode of Dan Smith Sunday supplement original art. Up until that time Smith was a nearly forgotten footnote in comic/illustration history. Since then he has been embraced by everyone from Al Williamson to Mark Schultz and a group of hardcore fans. I bought about 10 pages from Charlie from original trove of about 30-40, and kept the 3 best (although they were all good). Dan Smith was a master of the dry brush and his story pages are both breathtaking and funny at the same time. I'm sure his "big panel" concept was a major influence on Hal Foster.
In this page our caveman hero rescues a gorgeous maiden only to be snubbed by her for an older, bald dude. Ptretty funny, and some great art! These are large, prince Valiant sized pages.

I haven't even heard of this series but you certainly have a pair of fine examples. Interesting theory re: Smith influencing Foster.

Probably a bigger influence on guys like Lou Fine! This is one of the nicer ones
