Description(Acquired late March 2010, through a popular vending website).Comics heavyweight Kevin Nowlan foremostly blows me away, with his unique aptitude, for drawing characters so 'alive' in their own individual ways. And I imagine mr. Nowlan to being greatly respected by my own favourite artist, mood-master, graphic-storyteller-supreme and best-image-deliverer-ever Mike Mignola, the Godfather to all things Hellboy & BPRD. I actually think the cover which this was a prelim for, to being one of the nicer BPRD-covers. Because it seems to be beaming rich mood and lots of character. Even 'though it isn't by Mignola himself. With Liz majestically dark and appropriately stunning. Johann much his cooty and steampunky self. The new kid Devon young and uneasy. And Abe as alarmed and 'fluently fishy'-looking as he's possibly gonna get, since: what in the blazes will be up with Liz? Kate seems just a little young or frail for my liking, but not that it's putting me off in a big way. As a matter of fact, she does look 'elegant-born' both as deeply outgoing, which - if Kate'll have been inspired on a real person - I will know to be accurate since I met with that person, when Mike Mignola visited my country in March 2010, together with his wife. As 'team comics' seem to mostly go, centering 'round niftily assorted characters, bearing complimenting 'powers' or fitting fields of expertise, the BPRD seems to have grown on me, standing out as being most extraordinarily excellent, in an intricate way. As intricate as this cover seems to me - especially this preliminary version - rather pinnacly. From mr. Nowlan's blog I know this piece was pencilled and inked, with the larger blacks built up and filled in with a big marker. Some whiteout was used (if that's what the white eraser-paint is called) to move the black up from Liz a bit, leaving her hair still hanging down beyond it a little, as if for having her 'be or reside amid the dark' I imagine, with sort of adding more volume to her features perhaps. It might also just be for leaving room for the snakes which were to be added in the final cover version. No matter how far-off or up-close I move my head, Liz seems rendered just so vibrant yet darkly, with a fiery gloom rising from the top of her head both as out from her gaze, ghostly and broodingly. The contours of her hair being lit up visibly, whereas some of the ends hang 'round the characters in front, as if for wiggling similarly to some shoulder-shrugging from the characters, while wondering what is to become of Liz. And although Liz will hardly be someplace in sight, Johann's empty gumballmachine-face still distinctly offers a clear perspective on it all. Where Abe's fishy-sapian held up arm makes for appropriately accentuating the roomy box beneath - a space left open for the title and 'UPC boxes', of which the placement was dropped in the final cover.
