Description

This is an extremely interesting (all-pencil) piece which was apparently intended for the inaugural issue of Conan the Barbarian. Or, more accurately, this piece was excised from that particular issue. This was communicated to me by the seller (who is a very nice, knowledgeable as well as reliable person). There is, in addition, powerful documentary support in the form of the following extract from Roy Thomas's Foreword to the recently published "The Barry Windsor-Smith Archives: Conan, Volume 1" (which also saw print in the first issue of "The Conan Chronicles"), as follows:

"As for Barry, he seems to have literally frozen up, not drawing either hero or story as well as Stan and I both knew he was capable of doing. At one point he even drew Conan planting a haymaker punch on a winged demon; that became one of several panels that, as de facto editor, I had him cut out and replace with new art."

Not sure why Roy Thomas viewed this art as "frozen". To me, it looks like awesome vintage BWS!
