The Amazing Screw-On Head plus art lesson by Mike Mignola

My number one goal at the Charlotte Cheroescon 2010 was to meet Mike Mignola, tell him how much joy his work has brought me, and purchase a Screw-On Head piece. When I first saw Mike early Friday morning, I was 5th in his line. Sadly, he didn't bring any Screw-On Head pieces in his portfolio-- they're his favorite work and he rarely lets them go-- and he told me that he absolutely wasn't doing any sketches this weekend, so I contented myself with a sketchbook. But then on Sunday morning, I was early into the show, and I saw him sitting at his table, talking to several other artists. I went over and gave him a recreation of a panel of Hellboy that I had done as a study to see if I could figure out some things about his style. He said, "This is great! Do you want me to show you how I would have done it?" And then he proceeded to give me an art lesson for half an hour, and did an Amazing Screw-On Head sketch on the piece of paper he was using to teach me. He told me that when he tries to draw the Amazing Screw-On Head nowadays, he has trouble accessing the creative space that he was in when he was creating the book. I still have not come down from the clouds; this was one of the most enjoyable experiences I have ever had. Thank you for everything, Mike!
