Description

Black Marvel Mystic Comics #5 – 9 (March 1941- May 1942) The Black Marvel was the first success story in the revamped line up of Mystic Comics.
Where all the braves of the Blackfeet (sic) tribe fail to pass a near impossible series of trials of skill, strength, stamina and courage set to find a worthy successor for their dying chief, Dan Lyons, a white man, succeeds. After the old chief receives Dan's pledge to "destroy those enemies of mankind who would prey upon the helpless", he bestows upon him the title and the costume of the Black Marvel, and off Dan goes to fight the good fight.
Unlike his predecessors, there was nothing mystical or super scientific about the character's origins, nor was there anything particularly fantastical about his adversaries. The Black Marvel did battle one mad scientist, but generally he went up against the standard Nazis and thugs. He was pretty much just the typical square jawed hero.
What distinguished the strip was the level of quality of the artwork by Bob Hughes, Al Gabrielle and George Klein, among others. The strip is also notable for featuring some of the earliest scripts from a young kid named Stan Lee.
