This piece has been under glass for about 15 years. When I pulled it out of the frame to make this scan, I held it in my hands, a shiver went up my spine and I literally got goose bumps.

Arguably the best cover of the run. Unarguably the most famous, most replicated image of the CM series. How many times have you seen this image replicated by other artists AND Starlin himself. This is THE original-where it all started. You can see it here without the Romita face pasted over. Look at the anguish on that face. My God, who was the genius that decided to cover that up with a generic face? I'd love to see a list of the places this image and variations of it were used.

SIZE:
Also, as you can see the size of Cap was shrunk down in the published version to make room for the mast head. This explains the black "tabs" on either side of Caps neck. With the amount of glues stains currently still on there I assume that a stat was made and pasted over the image. (see comparison below) If you ever see a B&W stat of the published image please LMK. I'd love to see it!

AL MILGROM CHIMES IN!

"I assume John [Romita] decided to [change the face]. He was art director and would often say: "Stan wouldn't like that." Or "Stan would want that changed." I know he felt Jim's rendition wasn't "handsome enough". "

"If Our original [image] was too big for the cover size, it might've been statted down to make room for the logo and/or other copy. Happened quite frequently."

" [Inking this was] A big thrill for me. I think it was my first real work for Marvel (after a year-long stint working as a background guy for Murphy Anderson over at DC)."

When I win that ever-elusive lottery, you will be the first person I will call (sorry wifey!) -- although I suspect it may not be enough. One of my favorite covers in the history of comics, and certainly -- by far -- the best by Starlin on any title. An amazing iconic piece in an outstanding collection. Congratulations!

Oh boy, that's soooo beautiful. What an iconic cover. I'm not sure who the ghost artist was (yet I think Romita may be correct), but I spent enough hours perusing "How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way", as a teenager to offer up this possibility as to the change -- Starlin's rendition said, 'Human', while the replacement head screamed 'HERO'! At least in the mind of Marvel's 'men at the top'.

Captain Marvel #29 and Warlock #9. A pair of truly iconic covers, with iconic characters, in iconic poses, by a legendary artist. I would never split these up. Ever! One of the reasons I love having the original art is that when the editor or publisher decides to play around with the image (either by statting or re-sizing things), it's great to have the actual drawing as envisioned by the artist.
