Description

My inks on this were way too slick to suit Neal. Being the fan-boy that I am, I'm thinking of Adams circa 1972 as I ink this, but Neal has moved onto a much looser style. He's earned that right. In the printed comic, he re-inked much of the figure work in panels 3, 4, and 5. In a moment showing my own hubris, I redrew Deadman's lower right leg in panel 2, and Neal let it pass!

Dear Scott: I'll take the 1972 version any time, and your approximation of it was quite lovely. I don't understand Neal's wanting to change it, unless he wanted a consistent look from one issue to the next.

Scott- I consider my self a big fan/student of Neal's work. He was one of my biggest comic influences growing up. But I think his modern stuff is loose and sloppy looking and I really like that you have added some nice stability to his line work without compromising his drawing. Excellent work whether Neal likes it or not:)

An excellent job for the most part. But you're doing some things that weaken the art, Scott. (You tend to cluster areas of detailed rendering next to each other, flattening the depth, because you (and Neal) love to render so much. I can see why you opened up the stone steps on this page, but it creates a grey where Neal had a black, and the page is so wildly busy it needs those blacks. And you misinterpret his anatomy in some places, not that it's always correct. I used to be in such awe of Neal's anatomy, but now I know better.) Overall, though, you're helping him far more than you're hurting him. You're really fixing a lot of things (like that leg) that sorely need fixing. It's hard to believe Neal thinks the re-inking he's doing is for the better.

Ditto on 72. I MUCH greatly prefer the slick inks. Also, do more Batman books!

Viva your Adams circa 1972 feeling, Scott! Neal was better in the old days, happily your fanboy take is here for us to see! Great seeing you in SD, pal!

Neal wasn't better, you were just younger and more impressionable. Lol. No, I think Neal has continued to be affected by what's going on around him since he left comics. Or maybe that's how he would have drawn in 72 given color and printing capabilities of today. It's also just his 4th issue in what, 25 years. Comics are a different type of drawing. I can't wait to see what issue 12 looks like.

Love your inks on Deadman here, Scott. You are one of the architects of the look of modern super hero comics and your inks here really work well on these pencils.

Inking is not "Tracing" -- it's an interpretive art and it's one of the funner visual aspects of comics. Neal needs to relax. Besides, a good argument could be made that Neal's best stuff was inked by Dick Giordano at DC and Tom Palmer at Marvel...
