What th-? Who th-? Yeah, yeah, I can hear it now, what the heck has happened to Roland and has he lost his mind... What can I say, I'm not exactly a youngster any more, and when you're approaching 40 you tend to start getting a little nostalgiac for things from your youth. So, one fine Spring morning, I decided that even though I will continue on in my never-ending quest for Moy art and pinups of scantily-clad superbabes, I would divert some of my art-collecting energies into getting some stuff reminiscent of comics I read as a little kid, you know, the stuff outside the regular super-hero realms that I normally collect from these days. I'm not ashamed to admit that I read my fair share of Archie comics as a kidlet since I pretty much read any and every comic I could lay my hands on back then. And of course what red-blooded American male hasn't wondered once they've gotten past childhood which of Archie's female friends they themselves wouldn't want to date, provided they were comic characters, of course ;) Anyway, flash forward to the present - I was considering commissioning someone to do a B&V piece (staying true to my love of the female form) when I started noticing that long-time Archie inker John S. Lucas frequently had Betty and/or Veronica pinups on ebay, and they were usually pencilled by *the* B&V artist of note, the late and oh-so-great Dan DeCarlo. So I decided rather than go the commission route, I would shoot for the "real" thing. I was outbid on several pieces before I wound up scoring this fantastic piece from another seller, and it included a color print by former DC colorist Buzz Setzer; from the text written on the back, this was originally commissioned by Mr. Lucas of Mr. DeCarlo, then Mr. Lucas inked it and it has seen print in one of the Archie fan magazines - very interesting reading the history on it. This one has everything I could possibly want, although I may still go for that B&V commission that I have in mind... Now it's time to turn my attention to some other comics from my youth, but meanwhile I'll gave lovingly at this beauty. Pencils and inks on 11"x17" Bristol.
