DescriptionI was commissioned to restore this classic Spidey cover. The art was done on an unmounted sheet of vellum, with no logo or text, and the client wanted something that had the authentic look and feel of a Marvel cover from that time period. First, I created an appropriate Marvel cover art board (the "World Color" design). Next, I carefully adhered the vellum/art to the board, using archival adhesive and taking care that the vellum was flat and smooth. Using the published comic as source material, I created the logo, balloons, etc on stat-like, color matched paper and pasted them down archivally as well. As you can see, the restored version is now fully dispaly-able, and would be a great piece for anyone's collection! (BTW, I've listed Romita as penciller/inker because he signed the drawing, but I'd swear I see Gil Kane's work in there too. Maybe a Kane layout and Romita's finishes?) (James is available for hire to replace missing logos and lettering on comic book and comic strip art and to do cover re-creations and commissions. Please contact him with any questions or for a price quote. If you wish the restoration work to be private, upon your request, no images will be used in James’ public galleries.) Social/Sharing |

As I commented when this was posted elsewhere on CAF, this is without a doubt Kane/Romita in my eyes. That doesn't make it any less cool, of course!

Thanks Romain! With everything I do, the goal is to increase value and make the piece display better. These can be personal decisions though. For example, if the client had wanted everything to be totally flexible and reversible, I could have adhered the vellum art to mylar and then laid the logo, etc on another overlay. Some prefer restoration be done on overlays and others really dislike overlays. I give my recommendations, but the client makes the decision. I agree with both parts of your comment, Drake !
