DescriptionThe heavy cruiser USS San Francisco earned 17 Battle Stars and a Presidental Unit Citation during World War II. The armament included three triple 8-inch gun turrets, eight 5-inch guns, and numerous anti-aircraft guns. There were two catapults for the scout aircraft which would land on water and be lifted back aboard by a pair of cranes. The ship was built at the Mare Island Navy Yard in Vallejo, CA.My mother was born in San Francisco. Her father operated a candy store across the street from Seals Stadium at the time. To honor the city of my mother's birth and to celebrate the Giants first World Series victory in San Francisco, I decided it was time to ask Sam Glanzman to create a follow up to my USS Oakland commission. I'd read Marvel's A Sailor's Story and its sequel A Sailor's Story Book Two: Wind, Dreams, and Dragons by Sam Glanzman. He was a sailor on the destroyer USS Stevens during the war and became a comic book artist. Sam drew my USS Oakland in 2008. This time, I contacted Sam's agent Larry Shell in November shortly before Veterans' Day and arranged this commission which arrived in December. I'm thrilled with Sam's work. UPDATE: Thanks to Heritage Auctions, I learned Sam Glanzman drew the USS San Francisco in The World Around Us #10 The Illustrated Story of the Navy (Gilberton, 1959). It's rather surprising to see this battle depicted this way. Admiral Daniel Callaghan and most of his staff were killed on the bridge of the San Francisco when it was hit by a shell from a Japanese battleship. The Allied force prevented the shelling on the American air field on Guadalcanal, but suffered great losses.
