DescriptionSaw TRON: Legacy this weekend. Having started college when the first movie came out, and having killed a mainframe last year, I can relate. However, I must say the movie left me a little disappointed. Seemed to be both shiny and dark at the same time (whatever that means). Another sequel that came out in the early 80's was a little comic called Swamp Thing. Having to live up to the original 70's Bernie Wrightson version, it spiraled to a slow death at around 20 issues. Then, DC hired the mad magician Alan Moore to re-invigorate the title, and the rest was history. After his run came the Rick Veitch era. Hard to live up to after the Alan Moore run, but after a little jaunt in space, Swamp Thing was thrown into the past during DC's Invasion event, and went through time trying to return to the present for issue #79 thru #87 of Swamp Thing. During his trip, Swamp Thing met many of DC's historical characters, and was scheduled to meet Jesus Christ in issue #88 as he traveled thru time. Veitch's term ended in a widely publicized creative dispute, when DC refused to publish issue #88 because of the use of Jesus as a character despite having previously approved the script. The move was said to be made due to controversies then arising from the Martin Scorsese film The Last Temptation of Christ. Artist Michael Zulli had already partially completed the art. The move disgusted Veitch and he immediately resigned from writing, with Doug Wheeler replacing him for issues #88, where Swamp Thing ended up meeting cavemen instead. Starting around my 40th birthday, I spent several years searching for copies of the art and script to Swamp Thing #88. During my search, I also found other related items, the above art of which is one. Talk about a true grail page, it don't get more grail page that this!!! I purchased this from the old Desperado website when they represented Brian Bolland. Mr. Bolland was one of the earlier adopters of using computers to draw his art, which makes his original hand draw art extremely hard to come by these days.Social/Sharing |
