Description

No better time to be a child than the seventies when monsters were literally everywhere! Everything from bubblegum cards, aurora model kits, toy figures, comics, magazines, major motion pictures, and even weekly tv shows, no doubt about it, it was a "creature revival" (and I LOVED every minute of it). My Dad and I would sit up for all-night monster marathons better known as "creatures features". Even good ol' basic cable had spooky selections like Night Gallery, The Evil Touch with Anthony Quayle ("...a touch of evil in all of us ") and one of my all-time favorites, Kolchak- the Night Stalker! This page reminds me of those wonderful shows of the bumbling reporter who never got a break, portrayed by Darren McGavin. This is from the legendary team, Gene Colan and Tom Palmer. Everything these guys touched were simply amazing and this marvel series was no exception. The "Tomb of Dracula" storyline might of had its ups and downs, but the art this visionary team cooked up was nothing short of "superb". I think this page certainly showcases their wonderful gift of strong emotional story telling and powerful imagery. Colan is one of the legendary movers of the early days at marvel comics along side with Kirby and Ditko. The bottom panal of the reporter is a deadringer for Mr. McGavin and I love the shadowy pacing. This is from Tomb of Dracula #43 (1976) that also sports a cover from the master of macabre, Mr. Bernie Wrightson!

Great atmosphere! It took me a while to appreciate Gene's work, with unconventional perspectives in many of his panels, obscuring the main characters. But now I realize his drawings only heighten the intensity intimacy of the action.

Very cool! I completely forgot this, I too loved the Night Stalker tv series. It's a shame Darren Mcgavin, did play the role atleast a few years. With a much bigger budget. Better pay & much better scripts later. Colan & Palmer Nuff Said!

A perfect example of Colan/Palmer magic on this terrific title. The fifth panel is fantastic and what great storytelling. At some point, I really do need to add a Colan/Palmer TOD page to my collection. Congrats!

Aaaah, congrats on a great pick up! I was traumatized to watch this one go by (due to lack of funds), as The Night Stalker was my favorite show as a kid, and Colan/Palmer are the masters of cinematic comics!

I was a huge Night Stalker fan as well; several of those episodes really creeped me out as a kid. You really scored a great Dracula page here and having a Night Stalker homage is very sweet icing on the cake!

Great looking page Robbie. I fondly remember the Kolchak the Night Stalker TV show and this piece does indeed remind me of it.

Great Colan horror page! Palmer did a bang-up job on the inks as well, as usual!
