(Acquired in May 2011, through a popular vending site)

Comics creator Mike Mignola did the cover for 'Snake Moon', a novel by The Doors' keyboardplayer Ray Manzarek, published in 2007, of which the first 250 were sold limitedly, signed and featuring a sketch. One could say this sketch to being a genuine Mignola 'cover recreation', since he would have nothing else to be referencing to than the single image of the cover, as apparently he chose to, with sticking pretty closely to the whole of it.

The actual cover being a lush watercolor featuring a dude posing, dressed in his Sunday's best, sitting among dead corpses (also posing), fronting a shadowy battered plaster wall on which a prominent pain-ting of a guardian angel (sometimes named Jophiel) or cherubim with a flaming sword catching Adam and Eve near the forbidden fruit hanging from the Tree Of Knowledge.

All-in-all an idyllically ghastly moodpiece, portraying the stiff and sombre Victorian age, as well as the eerie luminousness or quaint lucidity of very old photographs.

I don't know if mr Mike Mignola really produced this image 251 times as meticulously as this, but I would guess so, eventhough such would be seeming quite the chore.

Since this sketch at least seems quite painstakingly compositioned and rendered into shapes and forms, built up from lines and shades that all seem to work pretty well.

As such offering a peek into hòw such would work, in the sense of being sort of rough or schematical. Which is why I feel very glad for acquiring this piece, also since I didn't yet own a novel done by a famous keyboardplayer, or so I believe.
