DescriptionI got this lovely piece in from Rob Stolzer (Thanks, Rob!). For those who do not know about the illustrator, please read this. Have admired his work for years, but never thought I would have one in my collection.Description in Rob's own words: This piece measures a whopping 22"x32¾", and was drawn in India ink with dipping pen, quill pen, and brush. Some of the thickly drawn lines in the figure of the boy were done in quill pen, while the finer lines were drawn with a standard metal nib. There is a detail shot of Gibson's signature at the bottom, and it is his typically juicy, and slightly decorative authentic signature. There is some light pencil text to the left of the "Gibson Girl". I can read the following: "But it is more than he looks (unknown word). He has given up saying his prayers because he is not afraid of the dark any more." Interestingly, Gibson changed the figure of the boy on the right. If you check out one of the detail shots, you'll see that underneath the figure of the boy is one of an older gentleman, also drawn with Gibson's assured hand. If you look very closely, you can see a seam that runs from the right of the woman's hair, down to the bottom of her coat. That's were the new piece was laid down over the other figure. It was glue down at the seam, so you can lift the right edge of the illustration to see the piece below. I have no idea if the idea for the illustration changed, or if Gibson used an old piece to create a new illustration. There is not publisher's markings on the back, outside of an old number, but judging by the caption, this looks like it was use more likely as a book illustration, rather than one for a magazine. The left, right and lower edges show traces of a previous matting, when they used to use glue to mat pieces (ugh). You can also see the discoloration of the paper, from being hung in the light for so long. Social/Sharing |
