Intended to be used as a promo poster and box cover art for the first in a series of video tape Artist profiles called Comics Quarterly, this piece actually saw print only once and thus barely qualifies as a published piece. But more on that later. First, the artwork.
FOR ME, this is as close to perfect a Monkeyman piece as I could ever ask for. I give it top marks not only in composition & content, but also in design, layout, and execution. A large and powerful rendering of the main characters serve as the centerpiece of a brilliant collage design. Utilizing every inch of space, the central figures are then surrounded by just about every villain and supporting character from the series. Having this piece practically eliminates the need to seek out a page with your favorite character because tlhey're all right here!
Now getting back to that "barely published" thing for a second. To my knowledge, the only time this image ever saw print was as a full page ad in the pages of the now defunct Overstreet Monthly. And even so, almost half the image was obscured with text. Making matters worse, only the main figures were colored, as the rest of the images were relegated to being a neutral background. All I can say is, thank goodness for the original.
As far as I know, the product for which this art was intended, never made it to production. But I have heard rumors or existing sample copies floating around. If anyone out there has a copy of the poster and/or the video, please let me know. By the way, this piece was acquired directly from the artist through his agent John F. So my thanks to both gentlemen! ENJOY!
